Sports Insoles
Building strong foundations for movement, power, and longevity

How custom insoles can help with sports performance:

Building strong foundations for movement, power, and longevity

Sports performance is about more than speed, strength, or skill. It relies on how efficiently the body moves, how well it absorbs and transfers force, and how effectively it recovers. At the centre of all movement are the feet. Whether participating in team sports, individual disciplines, recreational activities, or competitive events, good foot health plays a vital role in performance, comfort, and injury prevention.

The Role of the Feet in Sport

Every sporting movement begins at ground level. Running, jumping, turning, kicking, pushing, and landing all depend on the feet to provide stability and power. The feet act as shock absorbers, helping manage impact forces, and as levers, allowing energy to move efficiently through the body.

Different sports place different demands on the feet. Some require explosive power and rapid direction changes, while others involve endurance, balance, or sustained repetitive movement. Regardless of the sport, poorly supported feet can affect the entire body.

Common Challenges Affecting Sports Performance

When foot mechanics are not well supported, athletes may experience:

  • General foot fatigue and discomfort
  • Heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Arch strain or instability
  • Forefoot pain or pressure
  • Achilles tendon tightness
  • Ankle sprains or instability
  • Knee, hip, or lower back pain linked to alignment

These issues can reduce efficiency, limit training consistency, and increase the risk of injury.

Why Foot Health Matters for Performance

Why Foot Health Matters for Performance

Healthy feet improve movement efficiency, balance, and control. When the feet are properly aligned, force is transferred smoothly through the body, supporting speed, strength, and coordination. Poor alignment can lead to compensations higher up the body, increasing fatigue and placing strain on joints and muscles.

Good foot support also helps with recovery. Reducing unnecessary stress allows the body to heal more effectively between training sessions, supporting long-term performance.

How Custom Made Insoles Can Help

Custom-made insoles are designed to support sports performance by addressing individual foot structure and biomechanics. Unlike standard insoles, they are tailored to a person's unique needs, sport, and movement patterns. They help prevent common sports-related injuries by improving foot alignment and controlling excessive movement. They distribute pressure evenly across the foot and enhance shock absorption during high-impact activities.

By reducing strain and improving stability, custom insoles can reduce fatigue, improve comfort, and increase endurance, allowing athletes to train longer and perform more consistently. Improved alignment also supports the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back, reducing injury risk across the entire body.

With regular use, custom-made insoles provide a strong foundation for movement, helping athletes perform at their best while protecting their long-term foot health and overall wellbeing.

General guidance for selecting a custom insole

For injury prevention and performance promotion in general

These are general best-practice guidelines and the most commonly recommended custom insole features. Final prescriptions should always be individualised. We recommend seeking professional advice and guidance where symptoms, medical conditions or complex demands are present.

  • EVA density: Select high if you require a more rigid support
  • Insole length: Select full foot if the current insole can be removed from your footwear. Select ¾ length where there is minimal space to fit an insole into your footwear. Sulcus is between the two lengths
  • Heel cup depth: select 20mm if you want more stability
  • Middle layer: select Poron if shock absorbency is required, but this WILL take up space in your footwear when your foot is offloaded – please ensure you have adequate space in your footwear for this option.
  • Top cover: Choose EVA for black or beige colours, or Nora for blue, yellow, black or pink

Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear, helpful answers to common questions about our custom orthotics, fitting process, materials, benefits, care, warranties, and more to support your foot health and comfort.

How do I order bespoke custom-made orthotic insoles?

Simply purchase our Bespoke Insole Kit. We’ll guide you through taking accurate foot impressions at home, then hand-craft your custom insoles in our workshop and post them back to you.

Is there evidence custom insoles can help prevent injury and promote performance?

Yes. Our clients consistently report reduced pain, better posture, straighter hips, and the ability to walk further and faster without discomfort. Many prevent recurring issues and enjoy improved mobility in daily activities and exercise.

Why do my feet hurt and how can custom made insoles help?

Your feet hurt due to poor biomechanics, flat arches, or uneven leg length, which strain muscles and joints. Our custom-made insoles correct alignment, support your unique foot shape, relieve pressure, and restore pain-free movement.

Why shoe type matters when selecting and using bespoke custom insoles?

Shoe type matters because the fit, width, depth, and support of your footwear directly affect how well your custom insoles perform. The right shoes allow the insoles to correct biomechanics effectively and deliver maximum comfort and benefit.
